Lightsabers: 10 Blades We Love

Your father’s lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon… for a more civilized age.Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The lightsaber is one of the most iconic weapons in movie history, from the look to the sound and use they are the defining characteristic of the Star Wars universe. Today I’m going to explore the 10 most unique/iconic blades from Clone wars to TFA. In no particular order:

Darth Maul’s double bladed Lightsaber

The revel of this bade in the trailer for The Phantom Menace set the fandom on fire. Even better its use in the film has been considered by even prequel haters as one of the coolest and greatest things about the prequels.

Count Dooku’s curved hilt Lightsaber

When the Count first showed up many wondered exactly how this older fellow was going to fair in a lightsaber fight, turns out pretty well and this unique design was part of why. The blade was designed for lightsaber duels and curved handle allowed its user extra finesse and the ability to use it with one hand more effectively than a normal blade. The shape was copied by his apprentice Asajj Ventress who use two blades and a similar style as her master.

Ezra Bridger’s Lightsaber/Blaster

Love it or hate this lightsaber has brought a whole new element to lightsaber design and battle. The emitter of the blade has a familiar design to Vader, Yoda and Anakin lightsabers but the handguard adds something new. The stun blaster allows Ezra to carry and use his blade without revealing his Jedi training and Kanan took it to whole new level when he battled the Grand Inquisitor at the end of season one(One of the best lightsaber battles ever. Top five better the most of the movie battles)  This is a blade I’d love to see in the movie universe, maybe in the hands of Finn?

 Mace Windu’s purple Lightsaber

The purple blade was a request by Samuel L Jackson and it is completely unique to the Star Wars Universe. You can’t but think it would look silly in anyone’s hands but Master Windu’s and you would be right. A ranking member of the Jedi council and completely cool this blade made Windu stand out in the best way.

Inquisitor Spinning Lightsaber

During the Grand Inquisitor’s first battle with Kanan he surprised the Jedi when his single bladed lightsaber suddenly became double bladed. Then it began to spin… and a whole new idea of what a lightsaber could be was introduced. It is as menacing as the Inquisitor and now we know seemly built on an assembly line like Inquisitors are.

Pre Vizsla’s Darksaber

The blade once belonged to the Jedi until it was stolen by the Mandalorians and handed down by the generation until it was given to Pre Vizsla. Its unique design and color make stand out against the modern lightsabers it is used against. It seems fitted more to a Darkside user than Jedi which is probably why in the end Darth Maul claimed it as his own after killing Pre Vizsla

Kylo Ren’s Crossguard Lightsaber

The first teaser where the blade was shown set the internet on fire. People thought it was cool, people hated it, some thought it wasn’t practical and even dangerous to the user and others said it was a better design for those in a fight. In the end cool and useful won out. Kylo himself showed how the crossblades were both a defensive tool and an offensive weapon. The lack of stability in the blade could be seen and heard and matched the temperament of the user. It appears it was destroyed during the battle with Rey so I wonder if he’ll rebuild it or we will get a new design for teh next film, or maybe his grandfather’s old red blade

The Skywalker Lightsaber

reylukeanakin

Anakin’s blade passed down to his son by Obi-wan and now in the hands of Rey. We’re not saying she’s a Skywalker but if the lightsaber calls… well that’s another article for another day. This was the first lightsaber we got see on screen and though its users have a nasty habit of getting limbs cut off its still holds a special place in hearts of fans.

Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber

The first time we saw a lightsaber that wasn’t blue or red was when Luke took down the organization Jabba the Hutt. Its design is modeled to be an almost carbon copy of his first master Obi-wan’s blade, Luke used it to defeat Vader and presumably still has it in his possession, though this has not been confirmed.

Darth Vader’s Lightsaber

The ultimate bad guy’s lightsaber has to be on this list if only because of who welds it. The design was based off his original lightsaber and has similarities to Yoda’s blade. With Anakin’s abilities I wonder if he had already built this blade and just put a new red crystal in it once he became Vader.

This piece of Fan art by K31th-F shows Rey with a double bladed green lightsaber. Since she already has knowledge of how to use a staff in battle I could see her building this for herself to complete her training. We don’t know if she will continue to use the Skywalker blade and if she doesn’t this would cool to see on the big screen, why should the bad guys get all the cool new designs in movies?
