Luke’s new Force-powers

It’s interesting to compare the Force-powers that are used by Jedi in the Prequel trilogy compared to the Original Trilogy. On the whole, Jedi are more aggressive in their moves in the prequels. Force-pushes all over the place, throwing lightsabers into enemies. When we look at Luke in the OT, apart from a few Force-chokes, Luke seems to stick to Yoda’s rule that a “Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack”.

What kind of Force-powers will Luke have in Episode VIII? Will it be the same old stuff that we saw in the OT, or will he do some new and amazing stuff? Let’s take a look at all the rumors we have about Luke, see if there are any patterns in the Force-powers that he is rumored to have. As usual, there are possible SPOILERS for Episode VIII, so proceed with caution.

When thinking about all the new rumors, I couldn’t help but take a look at the old rumors for Episode VII. We had quite a feast of spoilers compared to what little we know now. Remember the old “Mizzlewump” rumors? Here is a complete list. It’s actually amazing how many of the old Mizzlewump rumors were true.  However, there is a lot on there that seems to have been completely false. One that stands out to me is this one:

Luke saves the day at the end, but in a bad way; he has changed

We didn’t see Luke save the day, and there is no indication that he has changed. Or is there? If we look at the common thread of rumors out there, there is a strong indication that Luke is using a new move that he never used before. Maybe desperate times require desperate measures, but Luke appears to be Force-pushing just about everything.

First, there was the Force-push video we saw in Dubrovnik (found via MSW):

In this video, we see someone being thrown through the air. Many have speculated that this is from Luke Force-pushing/throwing the guy, and this seems to be the most likely scenario. This wouldn’t stand out if not for other rumors…

We have the rumor of the fight between Luke/Rey and the Knights of Ren. We hear that Luke Force-throws the Knights of Ren into the air:

The first black knight has an axe and moves towards the Luke but is Force pushed away to his death after being thrown through the air.

Can you blame Luke? Not likely, he’s being attacked by the Knights of Ren. However, this isn’t where Luke’s Force-throws/pushes stop. There was another rumor that emerged on Reddit a while back, and although it is unverified, it got a fair amount of votes, indicating it doesn’t sound impossible to many fans. There was one particular quote that I noticed:

Here’s the saucy bit: A few weeks ago they blew up– specifically, blew apart– an Ahch-To hut. According to my source, Kylo and Rey have a conversation that Luke does not like. Luke tries to stop them. Luke gets angry… and the whole hut they are in disintegrates (re: ‘blows up’). My source did not specify as to the exact cause of the disintegration, but based on the info I believe Luke accidentally (or perhaps even purposely) does so using the Force.

So, like I said, this is totally unverified, but it seems plausible. This could just mean it’s a well-crafted fake. There are so many fakes this year that it’s getting silly. However, keep this is one in the back of your mind, and as more rumors come out, maybe this one will be validated. It is, however, consistent with the Force-pushing/throwing that Luke has been rumored to be doing. This rumor seems out of character, because it sounds like the kind of a temper-tantrum that we might expect from Kylo Ren. This, plus all the Force-pushes ends up sounding like Luke is more aggressive and angry.

Now I’m only building this into an article because if you think about it, nowhere in the Original Trilogy did Luke ever Force-push or Force-throw anyone. As if to retroactively add this power to the OT, Luke certainly uses the Force-push in Battlefront:

but never before in the OT. This may seem odd, but I guess this game is considered part of the new canon. The fact that it seems odd, to me, is because somehow this kind of move seems out of character. When did he learn this power, and does this more aggressive PT move say anything else about Luke? Has Luke “changed”, as stated in the Mizzlewump rumors?  Leave your comments below.
