Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer

Greetings, Star Wars fans! It’s that time again. That rare occasion when we get a brand new trailer for a brand new movie to come. Almost everything we know about this film is contained within this trailer, along with the other leaks, rumors and speculation that we’ve been covering. Let’s take a moment to digest this trailer, and contemplate what it all means.

The trailer begins with distressed breathing, and we quickly find out that it is Rey that is doing the breathing. This harkens back to the teaching of Luke, who told here “breathe, just breathe” at the beginning of her training. No doubt Rey is taking this advice as she centers herself before an oncoming TIE interceptor (or some variant of that ship). I only assume the ship is piloted by Kylo Ren, but after the move that Rey pulls by jumping in the air and flipping with her saber, I wonder if this pilot makes it out alive.

The tag-line that we next see in the trailer is a familiar one. “Every generation has a legend” is something that we’ve seen in other past Star Wars teasers, or at least something similar. Rey is looking a little red, presumably covered in dust and sand from the desert area she is in. This scene looks epic, and will no doubt be just one part of a long series of twists and turns on this planet.

Still no word for certain if this is Tatooine, Jakku, or something else. MakingStarWars speculated months ago that this place might even be Jedha, near some of the rocky terrain areas seen in Rogue One.

We are also treated to some great shots of Lando piloting the Millennium Falcon. These shots look great and seem like nothing but fun. Time will tell of exactly how Lando ties into the plot, but we’ve provided some speculation on this point, and the possibility of Lando playing a role in getting the Skywalker saber to Maz. It is perhaps remarkable that these shots are followed by some amazing shots of Leia hugging Rey. What’s amazing about these shots is they appear to be new shots of Rey, with old shots of Leia, presumably from unused shots from The Force Awakens. My impression of these shots is that they are seamless, and we need not fear how they will integrate the unused Leia footage with the new. Check out this article for more on Leia.

The theme that we’ve heard about this film, which I have now started to label ROS (but will continue to refer to Revenge of the Sith as RotS), is that it will be an adventure film. The big three, Rey, Finn, and Poe, will go on an adventure together. And Chewie, BB8, Dio, and C3P0 will be there too. It’s not clear whether or not R2D2 will be there with them. I really like this idea of a quest, or an adventure that leads the heroes to the sunken Death Star, presumably to uncover something hidden within. Recall the TFA concept art of Rey swimming underwater to the sunken Death Star. The scene didn’t happen, but these ideas could be the basis of some arcs of ROS.

Lastly, we have the laugh of Palpatine, along with the quote from Luke “No one is really gone”. A lot of people have taken this to mean that Palpatine will be actually in the film. We think it is pretty unlikely that a living Palpatine will actually be in the film. Brining him back will be very tricky to say the least. We discussed the pros and cons of bringing him back in this past article. With all that said, there was this leak from MSW that we previously discussed, which stated that there would be a “threat from the beyond” that would impact Kylo Ren. Could this involve Palpatine’s spirit in some form coming back? It seem the most likely scenario is that Palpatine’s actions in the past are having repercussions to the current events of the film, and their quest somehow interfaces this, but not to a living Palps. Intriguing nonetheless. It isn’t clear whether the recording of Palpatine laughing is a new recording, or an old one. In this interview here, JJ speaks of working with Ian, and it also says Ian will be in six films, and it was planned for a while. But who knows really?? Palps came back as a clone in the EU, so who knows what they’ll end up doing.

With that, let’s just say that we are stoked about this one. Seeing this new trailer has me super-excited about the months to come, and the new details that will emerge. We’ll be here at Spoiled Blue Milk to share with you everything we know, and what we speculate about. Until then, Star Wars fans, have a great weekend, and the Force will be with you. Always! 🙂
