The Force Awakens set the table for the new trilogy, then The Last Jedi broke all the plates in the best way possible. That gives JJ Abrams a whole mess of plot lines and characters to try to bring to a conclusion AND still leave the possibility open for future trilogies. So lets look into what we think should happen and what we would like to see.
Here are the five things we want to see.
Time Jump
The most important idea is a time jump, with The Last Jedi having started directly after The Force Awakens we currently have about a week’s worth of action so far. I would like to see at least a three year jump to allow the Resistance to build itself up a bit and the First Order to consolidate its power.
Rey with a few trainees/ fellow new Jedi.
If the Force is truly been awakened, like Broom Boy indicates, then there should be a new batch of people wanting to be Jedi. Rey has the books from tree and can share what she knows and learned. It would interesting to see Finn attempting to become a Jedi as well. At least attempting it, but who knows? Plus this gives Rey allies when she Faces Kylo and Knights of Ren. Will enough time have elapsed for her to gain a few trainees? It could be a nice touch if it was Leia that encouraged her to train new Jedi, and if that was part of the backstory to the timejump.
The Knights of Ren
The KoR were teased before and now it appears that they were former students of Luke’s that left with him. This adds potential for a rich backstory for those characters. They are a thread that JJ left, Rian hinted at, and are in the minds of fans. I would like to see the KoR fight against the other Jedi Rey trains give us a taste of the fights we all wanted see and the Praetorian guards vs Kylo and Rey gave us a glimpse of. There is a lot of opportunity here to really introduce some great new characters. They’ve been teased for so long, let’s work out the details and get some great actors to play them.
Kylo vs Hux.
There is an obvious dynamic between the two and Kylo is at best dismissive of Hux. This is his biggest mistake and one that Snoke pointed out. If Kylo losses control of the First Order and I suspect he will, it will be because of his treatment and attitude towards Hux. Hux has the loyalty of the troops and was going to kill Kylo until he woke… there is trouble brewing there. Kylo will survive but he will NOT be turning good.
Romantic angles?
This is a case where we disagree.
mazlow01: All romantic angles should be squashed in my mind. There is no clear cut couple or even one that makes sense outside of Poe/Finn. Han and Leia had build up, Anakin and Padme had destiny. There is nothing out there except the chemistry between Kylo and Rey and that door was symbolically and literally shut at the end of The Last Jedi.
davestrrr: Romantic angles, or romantic triangles? The thing is, you can have a romantic triangle without all parties being in love. For example, consider Revenge of the Sith–Anakin thought that Padme was with Obi Wan, or had at least brought him with her. This was all in Anakin’s mind, but it at least set up some of the drama. It doesn’t have to be a “love triangle”, but could be a friendship/jealousy/crush triangle. For example, consider how Rose will react when she sees the friendship between Rey and Finn. Consider how Finn will react when he finds out that Rey fought alongside Kylo Ren. Just imagine–Finn finding out that Rey had a connection and touched hands with Kylo Ren, the guy that sliced Finn’s back and almost paralyzed him for good. The opportunity for a meaningful drama on multiple fronts is huge. As for Rey and Kylo, I’m still of the view that they will ultimately join forces in some way.
Bonus idea: Chewie is recognized as the last surviving member of the Original group. We often call the main characters of the OT a Trio but Chewbacca is an equal to those three and should be recognized as such.
