The Rise of Skywalker trailer is here!

How goes it, Star Wars fans? The trailer is here! After long wait we’ve finally got something. If you’ve kept up with all the leaks then a lot of things make sense, but so much is still left unknown. We’re going to touch on some spoilers and speculation, so be forewarned. Let’s get to it!

Finally, a trailer!

Yup, we’ve finally got a trailer, and I’m assuming everyone that visits this site has seen it. It is pretty clear that the consensus is positive for this trailer. Even the youtube channels that devote so much time to hating on Disney Star Wars seem to be cool with this one. It’s hard not to be cool with this one. From where I’m setting, it seems to have it all. The Emperor, space battles like no other, Force-ghosts, and even the Reylo shippers got a little something.

A couple of notable things for me. I did get some Force-vibes from Finn’s quotes at the beginning. It would seem that a lot of people are divided on this point. Some take his quote about “it’s an instinct” and that “the Force brought us together” mean that Finn had felt something with the Force. We did an article on the possibility of Finn Force-sensitivity, and got these vibes from the quote. However, I feel like they didn’t touch these plot points in TLJ, and brining them back up now might seem weird. It could be something that they hint at, and one of those scenes like Finn sensing the Hosnian system is under attack and looking up kind of things.

I was happy to see Babu Frik, and hear his voice for a little bit. Interestingly, the dad from The Goldbergs Jeff Garlin is voicing a character that interacts with C3P0, according to his interview with SlashFilm. Naturally, this got me wondering if he was part of this scene, and I guess we can say that it sounds like he isn’t the voice of Babu, because from the context it sounds like he is physically there. Nevertheless, the scene he is in involves C3P0 and R2, so maybe it is related to the Babu Frik scene.

We got a shot of Palpatine, from the side it looks like. At least, I think that’s him to the left, while others may disagree. We also got a separate look at his throne, which is the huge ornate spiked throne that I’m sure you saw. There was also the throne room with Rey and Kylo standing there. I would say when I saw that, my thought was they got a little bit liberal with what is possible to survive the fall back to the moon of Endor. This seems a bit too intact if you ask me. That said, it’s a movie about space wizards after all, pretty much anything that is cool cinematically is valid.

Rey makes her way to the thrown room to find the “wayfinder”, which is some sort of galactic navigation device, and a plot device. We get a great shot of Rey and Kylo in the thrown room. I want to do an article discussing the parallels and mirroring going on here, and how this relates to some of the other mirroring we’ve seen. More on that soon.

Another cool note is that there is a battle droid off to the right of C3P0, here is a shot brightened up so you can see it:

According to leaks from MSW, C3P0 is needed to read some “Sith text”, and it is required that he delete his memory to do so, hence the scene in the trailer where he says “goodbye to his friends”. It’s possible that the battle droid contains the programming that they are transferring from, or it could just be wall decoration. Rumors suggest that R2 saves 3P0 right after by having a back-up of his memories. This could be R2’s big moment to save the day, as he has one in every film, but R2 could end up doing much more.

Rey was feeling a bit isolated, it sounds like. Her quote “People say they know me, no one does” suggests that she has gone through quite a lot, and no one has any idea what she has been through. Maybe Luke has a clue, but not even a complete picture. Rey’s emotions are coming through pretty strong with that line. She is supportive of the Resistance, but even if Poe says he knows she is Rey, he really has no clue what she has been through, and neither does Finn. A lot of her discussions with Kylo were off screen, so we don’t know how much she talked to him during their Force-time. Kylo may know her better than anyone in the Resistance. That feeling of isolation can’t be easy for her.

I’m not sure I can say much more about the trailer that hasn’t been said many times before. There are a lot of things I expected to be in it that weren’t but thats OK. The shots that we saw were immaculate. JJ isn’t messing around. They are trying like 8 different endings according to rumors I have heard. I don’t know how many endings are being tested, but JJ knows from experience that endings can be a source of controversy, and with this one he seems to be pretty careful. Its a smart approach to try out different endings and see how they feel on screen. There are some youtubers out there saying that this means that they don’t have a plan, but I disagree. Every Star Wars film has had some kind of reshoots, and famously wasn’t a very good film until the final editing stage, and it’s just covering your bases. What may seem great on the storyboard may not work on the big screen. What seems believable on paper doesn’t necessarily seem plausible when you actually see it. Long story short, I wouldn’t fret it, and this just means they are doing a very thorough job.
