Weekly Star Wars Recap #167: Dec 3rd, 2018

Greetings, Star Wars fans! We’re back for another week of Star Wars news, and this week has some good stuff. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

Episode IX Leaks and Rumors

Let’s call this “leaks and rumors” because nothing is confirmed, as we can’t tell if this is a leak or something else, but signs point to this being reasonably likely. The rumors come from reddit user u/Xyzsvtabc and have been corroborated by MakingStarWars. The details are two things. First, Kylo Ren may be sporting his helmet again, this time repaired by some sort of red crystalized glue of sorts, that will make his black helmet look red and black in a cool twisted way that may harken back to both Vader and leatherface. Second, is BB8 may have another sidekick. The sidekick may be Dio from Battlefront II, or could be a different droid with a similar name. Either way, this could be a cool bit of comic relief to see another droid pair’s hijinks. One more note, given that MSW has corroborated the post from Xyzsvtabc, it makes you wonder if that post could be mined for other minor details. There are other interesting points in there such as some Madalorian details, and this statement about Episode IX: “culmination of the movie being a battle between Rey and Kylo”.

Dio from Battlefront II

There are other Episode IX details, but these are less certain. One redditor has commented on Rey’s outfit for IX, but absolutely no confirmation of this. Another has posted some details about an organic jungle created in Pinewood. Fans will recall ealier that some vines were added to the Black Park location to make it look more “jungley”.

The Mandalorian Details

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) is reporting that Nick Nolte is going to be cast in The Mandalorian. This seems like some decent news as the actor has done some good stuff in the past, including the origina, Hulk film and others. Given his new look above, he could play some aging mentor character, or something to that effect. Still hoping that this series will delve into some of the events that led to the First Order, so who knows if his role will be relevant for that. In other news, it has been reported that Andrew S. Eisen has been cast as editor of the show, and Stephen Schiff has been appointed as “show runner”, which I assume is some big executive producer role. Finally, MSW is reporting that they have seen Jawas on set, further supporting the idea that the show will take place on Tatooine. This one seems believable, but given that they are putting all actors in robes these days to hide costumes, it is tricky to rule out these just being robes to cover up.

The Last Jedi: Consistent with George’s Vision?

One tweet that emerged from Phil Szostak is a little note about some artwork that appears in the Art of The Last Jedi. The tweet basically confirms that GL was thinking along the lines of a troubled hermit for Luke Skywalker. To me, the whole “reluctant hermit guru” is a mythological archetype (similar to Yoda in Empire) and should be such a big deal. It is story telling, and the story has more drama if Luke refuses to teach Rey. Furthermore, the whole backstory of Luke was there in TFA, so they didn’t have much choice for Luke given how he is described in TFA.
