Star Wars News Recap #179: August 31st 2019

Dear Star Wars fans! We’re back with another news recap. No longer weekly, but we’ll still be giving our views on the latest news, and also bringing you the theories you love. With D23 behind us, we’ve got a lot of new information, so expect some theory articles soon. In the meantime, let’s get back into the swing of things with some news. Spoilers ahead!

Daisy Ridley and JJ Abrams on Rise of Skywalker

In a recent interview with MTV news, Daisy Ridley just might have calmed any fears of controversy in the next chapter of the Star Wars saga. We have high-hopes here, but for those of you out there that fear a controversial ending, she at least says that it won’t be as controversial as the Game of Thrones ending. As controversial as that ending was, that might not be saying much, but it still builds some excitement for me.

JJ Abrams also commented on whether or not Rian Johnson’s film derailed any storylines that he may have been considering. In a recent interview with ET Canada, JJ assures us that “Episode VIII didn’t really derail anything”. I would be surprised if it did, but this comment sort of addresses whether or not there was a plan all along, and at the very least assures us that Rian Johnson’s film was consistent with the original plans, or may have been part of a secret plan all along. I don’t buy the narrative at all that there wasn’t a plan for the biggest franchise in movie history. Do you?

Rise of Skywalker Plot Leaks

This one comes from redditor JediPaxis, and he has compiled plot details from his sources. This guy has been relatively reliable in the past. You may recall his posts on the “Oracle” that we covered before. I can’t vouch for the validity of this content, but it is plentiful, so I suggest you head there and maybe upvote? Interesting ideas include that the Emperor is planning on building a “New Empire” and it sounds like he is very much alive albeit old and decrepit. I find this point a little hard to believe, but I’ll roll with it for a minute. Interesting details include a dagger (which could be the long-rumored MacGuffin in addition to the “wayfinder”) that includes a language that C3PO can’t translate. This could explain why C3PO is traveling with the main crew on the planet of Pasaana, which was seen in the trailer and recent D23 footage. Head over there and check it out for yourself, and make your own judgement.

Making Star Wars also released a pretty big article here. This article is super-cool, and has a tidbit about C3PO translating a “Sith text”, which results in him getting the red eyes. I think the idea of a language so evil that merely translating causes such a transformation is funny and cool, but I can also see some people thinking that is too cartoony. We’ll see how it plays out on screen.

Madalorian Trailer from D23

OK, so you’ve probably seen this trailer, but we haven’t gotten a chance to cover it yet! So here it is. This think is kick-ass. The best is the action with IG-11, the droid that looks like IG-88, but isn’t. I admit when I first saw the droid puppet I was a bit skeptical of how it would look on screen. But now, I think this is going to work and work well.  The action looks good, and with the right editing and cut-shots this thing is going to look pretty real. The space-western vibe is on point, and there is something that reminds me of Samurai Jack in a way. Admittedly, Samurai Jack was largely inspired by a lot of Star Wars stuff, but the droids, gun-slinging, and spaceships come together in a very cool way that I can’t describe in any other way. Well, here is the trailer:
