Trailer talk: About that last scene

You know the one. Rey speaking, the darkness surrounding her light shining on her face, Kylo in the dark with his stretched out. Internet sleuths quickly deduced that this was a misdirection and the two scenes were shot at different places and take place at different times in the film. They were right about the scenes are different shots but is it really misdirection? Lets explore these scenes, as always potential spoilers ahead.

Luke Rising from the Ashes

The Force-back in The Force Awakens showed us Luke looking heart broken next to R2 with a burning building in the background. That image gave us ideas of what may have happened, and most of the theories developed went with “Luke came home to find his Academy, and students killed by Kylo Ren and possibly the Knights of Ren.” But now we know that is not true. Let’s talk about what that means.

Luke Skywalker: A Lost Hope.

Ever since Mark Hamill said he fundamentally disagreed with Rian Johnson’s choices for Luke and the “The Jedi must end” line in the teaser, people have speculated that Luke will go dark. They are wrong. Today we’re going to explore why they are wrong and what Mark and the line really means.

The Latest Han Solo rumor…

The untitled Han Solo has been through quite a bit of production woes. It also doesn’t seem to have intrigued many fans, this is my own personal perspective based on social media and article comments etc. The latest rumor has split the fan base as well. Lets look into it and talk about what it could mean.

Getting to the Hux of the matter

If there is one character we don’t really know much about, besides Snoke of course, it’s General Armitage Hux. He seems to be fanatical and in charge of the military wing of the First Order… and that’s about it. No novels about him, no short stories, and no comics, and he is a strong secondary character. Lets look into what we do know and see if we can figure him out. Speculation and spoilers to follow.

That’s im-POE-ssible! Everything we know about Poe in The Last Jedi

Though we have heard that Poe’s involvement will be more substantial in The Last Jedi, we have not gotten many details. He was the breakout character from The Force Awakens, gave Finn his name, and he wasn’t even supposed to survive. Luckily Oscar convinced JJ to keep Poe around and we’ll get to see more of him in The Last Jedi. I’m going to try to put together everything we know and see if we can figure out what Poe is up to during The Last Jedi.

Who were the Clan in TFA?

There has been much speculation on Rey’s orgins and one of the most prevalent ideas is that we see her family die in the Force-back in The Force Awakens. I’m referring of course to the “Clan” that was killed by Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren. Unfortunately, the timeline doesn’t really work for most of those theories, so the question is then who are the Clan? Let’s look into what we have learned and see who they might actually be. Potential spoilers ahead.

Praetorian Guards-Past and Present

Let me be honest, the first time I saw the Praetorian guards on MakingStarWars.net I was concerned. I thought they might be a little too derivative. I have changed my mind, these guys might be everything we hoped the Knights of Ren would be. Lets talk about them, their inspiration, and what it might mean for their future.

Everybody wants to Rule the Galaxy

The Sith under Palpatine had a goal, destruction of the Jedi and to rule the Galaxy. The First Order under Snoke has a goal, destruction of the Jedi and to Rule the Galaxy. In the old EU the darkside seemed to have the same goal 1000 years before ANH and few hundred years after. The question is why do they want to rule the Galaxy? Why did the First Order decide to leave the Unknown regions and attempt to take over? Lets see what we know and if we can figure out the motivations that drive Snoke and the First Order.

The new EU

For years the old EU was the only new Star Wars we got, then the Prequels happened! And then it was back to the EU, which was then wiped clean with the exception of The Clone Wars series once Disney acquired Lucasfilm. This was done for several reason which we discussed here. It was a good call without most of the reasons and today I’m going to discuss why the New EU is so much better.

Ignite the Green

With the Vanity Fair article last week we got a few new shots of Luke Skywalker and one thing was conspicuously missing, his lightsaber. The weapon of Jedi Knight that told Vader Luke had completed his training, the question is why. Let’s jump into what rumors are out concerning Luke and see if we can figure it out. Potential Spoilers ahead.

Vanity Fair: The Last Jedi

As predicted by many this week Vanity Fair rolled out their Last Jedi issue. Yesterday we were treated to the cover of the magazine which included Kelly Marie Tran making her the FIRST Asian woman on the cover of Vanity Fair. It also included an unmasked Phasma along side Kylo Ren and General Hux. Today we have been treated to the their full length article on the movie and this article with tidbits from Pablo Hidalgo. We’re going to break down what we’ve learned and what we THINK it means. As always potential spoilers ahead.

Opinion: Leia in IX

In the immediate aftermath of the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher, the last thing we wanted to think about was what happens to Star Wars. Though that is what brought her into most of our lives, it was inconsequential to the loss a daughter, mother, friend, and to the many she helped by championing mental health advocacy. With Episode IX now having finished its first draft and time to come to terms with the loss we are going to look into how we think Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow will handle the loss of Carrie and what happens to the character of Leia.

Its not Jar-Jar’s fault.

There are many things that get blamed on Jar-Jar Binks. The dislike of the prequels from fans that saw all of them 4 or more times in the theater. The formation of Empire because of his call for emergency powers. If not that, then the entire saga as he is the true Dark lord of the Sith behind it all… None of it his fault.

Celebration Surprise

Last week on The Star Wars Show Andi and Anthony stressed that we would not want to miss the 40th anniversary panel. This has led to rampart speculation on what will be shown or discussed, from confirmation of Anakin in The Last Jedi to a slate released until 2030. I feel there’s only three options, a Last Jedi trailer, George Lucas showing up, or Obi-wan. Let’s talk about it.

The End of Maul?

Tomorrow we get the showdown this season has been teasing all year… Obi-wan vs Maul II: The Duel in the Dune Sea. The question is what happens. Will Obi-wan kill Maul (again), will Ezra deal the final blow, or will Maul walk/run away? Also will we see Luke? Let’s speculate.

Finn: Intergalactic Man of Mystery.

Finn, no last name, First Order defector, Resistance fighter,  Lightsaber wielder, terrible pilot and all around good guy. When we last saw him he was unconscious after a lightsaber strike to the back and we had no knowledge of how he would be when he woke. Well we’ve gotten some clues and today we’re going to spend a little time on my favorite new Star Wars character and speculate based on what we have learned. Potential spoilers Ahead!

Changing our view of the Rebellion

There has been a view of the rebellion for close to 40 years now that they were fighting for freedom but doing so in a way that made them better than the Empire they rebelled against. In movies you never got the idea that they would resort to the tactics of the Empire: fear, pain, and suffering. But for the first time this has changed and it started when we were introduced to Cassian.

In Memoriam: Carrie Fisher, May the Force be with her.

There is so much that I am feeling right now I honestly don’t know how to process it.

In real life, Carrie Fisher wasn’t a princess, and she wasn’t a General. Nevertheless, she ruled the hearts of many and she fought the good fight on and off screen. Let us honor her memory by fighting that fight. Stand up for one another, confront your demons and share your troubles. Be as strong as Carrie was.

In her book, Wishful Drinking, Fisher wrote: “I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”  Fisher lived a life of good spirits and humor, and touched so many be her work as a screenwriter, actress, and author.

She died today on December 27th at 8:55am PST following a cardiac arrest on December 23rd. Carrie was survived by her mother Debbie Reynolds and daughter Billie Lourd.

The Force will be with you, Always.

Rogue One:This is not the review you are looking for

Last night was the US release of Rogue One and based on the reaction on twitter and fansites its the greatest Star Wars movie since Empire and everyone’s 2nd or third favorite. Many people talking about how its the Star Wars they always wanted. I couldn’t disagree more, Rogue One was ok but its not great for several reasons. The first part of my review is spoiler free but pay attention to the spoiler warning because after that I get real spoilerly.

Rogue One: Deadpool

Morbid isn’t it? For months we have seen different statements across the internet relating to characters that live and die and how Disney wouldn’t allow X to die/happen. I believe its either wishful thinking or the Disney bias that people for some reason have so lets have some fun with it. This is our official pool of who dies and lives. We all know that they steal the plans for the Death Star, the unknown is how many of the characters will make it. Some of this is speculation some is known, so beware spoilers ahead.  more “Rogue One: Deadpool”
